Join us for a day of exploring facts and possibilities. Generate hope for the future and energy to make a difference at the Quad City Earth Charter Summit. In addition to presentations and displays by local groups and individuals, we are privileged and excited to be featuring from New York City, "No Impact Man" aka Colin Beavan and from the University of Iowa, renowned environmentalist Professor Jerald Schnoor.

Cost is just $20 per person and includes lunch. Seating is limited so early registration is suggested. Plan to attend! Additional details about the summit and participants can be found at www.qcearthcharter.org where registration brochures can be downloaded.

The Earth Charter is an international agreement incorporating the following principles: respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice and a culture of peace. It seeks to inspire a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well being of the human family and the larger living world and is not aligned with or owned by a particular political party, religion or socio-economic group. The major consideration is quality of life for all.

Social Justice Conference

The 5th ANNUAL AMBROSE WOMEN FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE CONFERENCE - "GLOBAL AND LOCAL PERSPECTIVES ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING"

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Human trafficking is a human rights crisis that reflects the dark side of globalization. Participants in this conference will explore global and local perspectives on trafficking in order to seek gender-responsive solutions that focus on empowering the survivors and prosecuting the traffickers.

The goals of the conference are threefold:
1. To educate participants on global and local perspectives on human trafficking.
2. To assist service providers (health care workers, social workers, law enforcement officials and others interested in human rights) to recognize human trafficking, empower survivors, and refer them to appropriate agencies.
3. To continue the dialogue with policy makers to strengthen Iowa's laws on human trafficking and to support international statutes against trafficking to ensure that traffickers are prosecuted.

The Conference Committee invites proposals for papers, panel presentations, or workshops that discuss multiple perspectives on human trafficking. Each session will be 75 minutes long, and will usually include 3 presenters and a session moderator, but individuals or groups with a workshop format may request an entire session.

New Davenport Library

Dear friends, I know that each of you is committed to education, learning and reading for all. That is why I jumped at the opportunity to help raise money for the new branch of the Davenport Library which is to be located at Eastern Avenue north of 53rd Street. What a wonderful opportunity! We've already raised an impressive amount of money, but we are attempting to close the deal with a 1.2 million dollar challenge from Vision
Iowa
. I thought perhaps you'd be able to help. Visit www.friendsofdavenportlibrary.org to make a contribution.

Oh, one more thing, the building is going to be an eco-friendly building, a LEED building. I hope that if you are interested in this kind of thing, you'll find the chance to give. Your contribution can be given over 3 years. It's not charity--it's an investment! Thanks for all you do and for all you support.

Watch YouTube - Help Defund the War

AFSC has just released a new 2 min. video to help people understand the outrageous amount of money that is being spent daily on the Iraq war -- at the expense of meeting human needs.

To reach the widest audience, we need your help. On YouTube, the more views a video gets, the more visibility it gets.

So we are asking all our friends and supporters to
- watch this video (at least once)
- rate it (be honest) and
- send it to your whole network of friends and family with the same message.

We want to get at least 1,000 views the first week -- maybe higher.

Please take a minute now - click here and watch the video!

After you view the video and send it to your friends, if you have a few more moments, please sign our petition to Congress to DEFUND the Iraq War and RE-FUND human needs at home and in Iraq!

Thanks much for your help.
